Gastric Banding
Gastric banding is a breakthrough weight-loss procedure, requiring no stapling or intestinal rerouting — making it the safest and least invasive obesity surgery available. Gastric banding is the only adjustable and reversible surgical treatment available in the United States. And because it’s noninvasive, it's performed as an outpatient procedure at Goshen General Hospital. Gastric banding also has the lowest complication rate of any surgical option, including the risk of malnutrition.
How Is Gastric Banding Performed?
In this procedure, an inflatable silicone band is placed laparoscopically around the upper portion of your stomach, creating a small pouch.
How Does Gastric Banding Work?

By limiting the amount of food your stomach can hold, gastric banding slows digestion and reduces the urge to eat between meals. With this procedure, you can expect to lose somewhere around 40 percent of excess weight within a year after your surgery. There are, however, disadvantages to consider. Most patients experience slower initial weight loss than gastric bypass RNY and Lap-RNY procedures, which tends to equalize after 60 months. Also, regular follow-up visits are critical to ensure the best possible results.
The U.S Food & Drug Administration approved LAP-BAND®, one type of gastric banding, in June 2001. Since its international clinical introduction in 1993, the system has been used in more than 500,000 procedures worldwide.
